First fruits of Novi Ligure and surroundings

Merella chickpea is a typical variety of chickpea grown in the rural hamlet of Merella for more than a century, in a flat area a short distance from the Scrivia River in the municipality of Novi Ligure. This is a rather unusual area for chickpea cultivation in Italy, which is generally widespread in the center and south of the country.

This legume, which is sown in March and harvested in July, finds dry soils the ideal area for cultivation. Just in the hamlet of Merella, in August, dishes based on these extraordinary legumes can be tasted during the Merella Chickpea Festival; these chickpeas have also been recognized as a P.A.T (Traditional Food Product) by the Piedmont Region.







Craft beer: around Novi Ligure there are a number of master brewers who produce excellent quality craft beers, many of which have won numerous awards.These breweries are located more specifically in the municipalities of Pasturana, Predosa, Costa Vescovato, and Tortona, and their beers can be tasted in many restaurants, pizzerias, and pubs in the area.








Novese canestrelli: typical sweets from the Novese and Ovadese areas, shaped like a doughnut or ring. They are cookies made from olive oil, flour, yeast, salt and sugar, but unlike other types of canestrelli they are kneaded with fine white wine Cortese di Gavi DOCG, instead of the water commonly used. They are handcrafted, year-round, by pastry shops and bakeries in the area.The origins of Canestrelli Novesi are quite remote, for the purpose of documenting the traditionality of the product, copies of invoices from before 1970 have been attached. The name “Canestrello” probably derives from the typical woven wicker containers called “canestri” in which the sweets were placed after baking. Canestrelli Novesi are usually eaten for breakfast or with thea.







Grappa: the province of Alessandria has a long tradition in the production of this distillate, there are several distilleries scattered around the province, for example in Silvano d'Orba about 15 km. from Novi Ligure is the award-winning Gualco distillery active since 1870 fresh winner (2023) of the gold medal at the National Grappa Competition
