The first document is dated June 3, 972: preserved in the State Archives of Genoa, it mentions the lease of vineyards in the locality of Meirana granted by the bishop of Genoa to two citizens of Gavi. In 1659 in the correspondence between Montaldeo Castle and Marquis Doria appears a reference to plantings of "vines all of cortese." In 1798 Count Nuvolone, deputy director of the Agricultural Society of Turin, mentions Cortese in the Corteis form (in the Piedmontese language), stating that: "it has rather long clusters, rather large berries, when ripe it turns yellow and is good to eat, makes good wine, is plentiful and keeps well." Today, Gavi is one of the most appreciated and world-renowned Italian white wines. Gavi wine is distinguished by its fresh and delicate flavor profile, with notes of green apple, white peach, white flowers and a subtle minerality.
